Your Daily Meds - 24 November, 2022
Good morning and welcome to your Thursday dose of Your Daily Meds.
Bonus Review: What makes lymph flow?
Answer: Well, there are some intrinsic and extrinsic factors -
Intrinsic - muscular walls and valves - so contraction causes some flow in larger lymph vessels; and the valves ensure forward flow
Extrinsic - external pressure compresses the lymph vessels, flap valves between endothelial cells of the lymphatic capillaries prevent lymph flowing back into the interstitium; much of this external pressure comes from muscular contractions (skeletal muscle) and pulsation of neighbouring arteries
Something Anatomical:
With regard to the cardiac vasculature, which of the following vessels is not considered a tributary to the coronary sinus?

Small cardiac vein

Great and Mighty:
After the arterial supply of the heart, blood flows from the subendocardium via the Thebesian veins in the myocardium into larger veins that will eventually empty into the coronary sinus (and then the right atrium). The five tributaries that drain into the coronary sinus are:
Great cardiac vein
Small cardiac vein
Middle cardiac vein
Left marginal vein
Left posterior ventricular vein
So ‘right marginal vein’ is not invited to this party…

Mind the Gap:
Personality disorders are enduring patterns of behaviour and inner experience significantly deviated from the person’s culture, that manifest with changes in two or more of: cognition, affect, interpersonal functioning and impulse control. Personality disorders manifest with characteristics that are inflexible and pervasive, and as a pattern that is often well established by adolescence or early adulthood, as opposed to a sudden onset change.
People with schizoid personality disorder, a cluster A personality disorder tend to be isolated, unsociable, reserved and introverted. They may lack social skills and prefer their own company. They may have few, if any, friends, and may not appear to express interest in seeking relationships.
In conversation, people with schizoid personality disorder may have a detached or flat affect and lack emotional warmth.
The other options for this question are cluster B personality traits that may be more specific to borderline or narcissistic personality disorder.
Bonus: Are there any differences in composition between interstitial fluid and lymph?
